Angels and Monsters: A Child's Eye View of Cancer, Lisa Murry, Billy Howard, American Cancer Society

Angels Don't Have Headlights, VHS, 25 minutes, Filmaker's Library. Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Mason produced this sensitive film on bereavement. It shows four children aged three to eleven, who lost a family member through death. Skillfully interviewed by a pediatrician or a psychologist, the children reveal their fantasies, their fears and their grief. This video shows how the child's conception of death and the child's grieving process differ from those of an adult, and in fact, vary considerably with each developmental stage. It presents a model for clinician-child-family interaction where the professional has the opportunity to foster the emotional health of the young person.

Crossing Over, Barnard, David; Anna, Towers; Patricia, Boston; and Yanna, Lambrinidou, 2000. Crossing Over depicts the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of daily life in patients' homes and in the palliative care unit, exploring how individuals find personal meaning in illness, and how this influences the experience and outcome of care. It captures the diversity of people's aspirations and ideals as they face death, and the often-challenging conflicts between their views of death and the views of the professionals who care for them. This book brings to life the anger and fear, tenderness and reconciliation, jealousy and love, social support and "falling through the cracks," the unexpected courage and unshakable faith, which are all part of facing death. It provides an extraordinary portrait of the processes of giving and receiving palliative care. This book is ideal for practitioners and trainees in medicine, nursing, gerontology, ministry, counseling psychology, allied health, and social work.

Designing and Assessing Courses and Curricula, Diamond, Robert. Jossey-Bass. December 1997. The author is an experienced educator and teacher trainer in higher education.
