Depression Question
In the video the question of depression was raised. A couple of questions came from our group:
Is it always necessary to have a psych consult regarding clinical depression before a doctor can follow a patients wishes to end treatment or move into palliative/hospice care?
At what level of depression/clinical depression would a patient be deemed to be no longer be able to make decisions for themselves (moderate depression?; severe depression?, other?)
Depression
At the end of this video the phsicain unfortunately failed to validate the mother's concerns and wishes for goals of care. That was the teaching point of the video. This lady is not depressed.
For further discussion on depression I would suggest you review the works of Dr. Harvey Chocinov and dignity conserving care.
